New Pokemon Go Event Makes It Much Easier To Get Evolution Items

Pokemon Go's Friend Fest has come to an end, but a new event is set to begin very soon. Niantic has announced the game's first evolution-themed event, which kicks off this week and makes it easier to find Pokemon that evolve in unique ways--as well as another new Shiny Pokemon.

The evolution event runs from December 5-12. During that time, Pokemon with unique evolution methods--such as Onix, Eevee, and Roselia--will appear more frequently in the wild, Raid Battles, and Field Research tasks. Lickitung, Scyther, Togetic, and Ralts will appear as Raid bosses as well, while Tyrogue, Feebas, Burmy, and Happiny will hatch from 2 km eggs. You'll also have your first chance to catch a Shiny Burmy.

Those aren't the only bonuses available during the event. Any Lure Modules you use during the event will last for one hour rather than 30 minutes, and you'll receive twice as much XP for evolving Pokemon as normal. Additionally, you'll receive evolution items like the King's Rock and Sinnoh Stone from Raid Battles and special event Field Research tasks.

Finally, as part of the evolution event, Niantic is hosting a special Evolution Raid Day on Saturday, December 7. From 11 AM to 2 PM local time, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and their evolved forms will appear as Raid bosses, and you can receive up to five free Raid Passes from Photo Discs during the event. That isn't the only event happening this month. December's Community Day weekend is set for December 14-15. During that two-day period, all featured Pokemon from previous Community Days will be available again in the wild and Raids, and there will be various bonuses to take advantage of. The Legendary Pokemon Terrakion is also still available in five-star Raids until December 17.

Pokemon Sword and Shield: You Can Now Battle Gigantamax Snorlax

You can now do battle against and, if you're victorious, perhaps even catch Gigantamax Snorlax in Pokemon Sword

and Shield's Max Raid Battles. This is part of a limited-time event that will run until January 5, 2020.

If you want to fight against Gigantamax Snorlax, make sure your game is fully updated, and then check out the Pokémon Dens that dot the Wild Area. You need to be connected to the internet to enter a Max Raid Battle.

"Players can also achieve the same results manually by opening the X menu in their game, selecting Mystery Gift, and then selecting Get the Wild Area News," The Pokémon Company revealed.

Gigantamax Snorlax will be available in Max Raid Battles until January 5, 2020 and is said to be one of the strongest Dynamax Pokémon discovered so far. Not surprising given that it's 114 feet and 10 inches in height and is covered in "thick fat."

The Gigantamax version appears in the game as Snorlax always does: lying on its back, lazily doing a whole lot of nothing. However, the official description tells us that "thanks to the power of Gigantamax, the Berry seeds and small rocks that were tangled in Snorlax's belly fur have undergone explosive growth."

Not only does Gigantamax Snorlax resemble a mountain, it's said to move as much as one too. When it's time for battle, however, it "lifts its upper body by just a tiny amount and attacks by flailing with its arms and legs - actions that actually pack a tremendous punch."

While Snorlax usually has Normal-type attacks, the Gigantamaxed version can also transform those attacks into G-Max Replenish. This deals damage to enemies but also restores any berries that its allies have eaten during the battle.

Every New Gen 8 Pokemon in Sword and Shield

Gigantamax Snorlax is the second Pokémon to be available through Mystery Gifts, with the first one being Gigantamax Meowth - which is available until January 15, 2020.

Angry Over Pokemon Sword & Shield? A Japanese Indie Dev Has An Alternative In Disc Monsters

For those dissatisfied with Pokemon Sword and/or Shield, there's an indie alternative that brings things back to the Game Boy era. Not only for Pokemon, but touches of Dragon Quest Monsters too. Consider it a nostalgic montage.

Disc Creatures comes from a Japanese indie developer who goes by the online handle SATTO. He worked alone on this project for three years (with an additional two years spent on English localization), channeling his enthusiasm. "Pokemon and Dragon Quest Monsters are both game 'bibles' to me, so I referred back to them a lot when working on this game," SATTO writes, in a translated answer courtesy of publisher Dangen Entertainment.

SATTO's story is undoubtedly familiar to most '90s kids. That's when Disc Creatures popped into SATTO's mind. "I got the idea to make this game right after the first Pokemon was released, about twenty years ago. I was in elementary school at the time. and drawing your own Pokemon was a popular thing to do… Ever since then, I'd always wanted to put the characters I'd thought up into a game and see them move around… This game was created based on all the things I had thought up when I was a kid," he writes.

Inspiration isn't enough though. In Disc Monsters' case, working solo meant no feedback loop; this was all SATTO, and that caused some problems. "In the beginning I planned to have around 100 creatures total. But I ended up adding more and more until the number became around 200 creatures. So it took me a lot of time to finish setting up each creature, and I ended up with so many creatures that I didn't even have places on the map to put them," he explains. 

With those lessons in mind. SATTO is working on a follow-up to Disc Creatures. He's planning to include a lot of original ideas to further separate his game from its origins. To note, although the inspiration is clear, Disc Monsters already carries an identity of its own. "A lot of players who've actually played the game have also commented on how it really is a totally different game from Pokemon and Dragon Quest Monsters," SATTO notes. Sounds like he's already getting close to a unique indie extension of monster hunting/battling.

Pokemon Sword & Shield: Every Gigantamax Form And How To Get Gigantamax Pokemon

One of the big new features in Pokemon Sword and Shield is Dynamaxing, which increases a Pokemon's size and powers up its stats for three turns during battles. While any Pokemon can Dynamax, only a few species are capable of Gigantamaxing, which not only supersizes a Pokemon, but changes its appearance as well.

Even among the Pokemon species that can Gigantamax, only special individuals are actually capable of taking on these forms. For instance, only certain Butterfree you catch through Max Raid battles can Gigantamax; those you capture normally will only be able to Dynamax. You can also get a couple of Gigantamax Pokemon for free; if you have save data from Let's Go Pikachu or Eevee on your Switch, you can get a Gigantamax Pikachu or Eevee at the Wild Area Station, and everyone who picks up Sword or Shield by January 15 can get a free Gigantamax Meowth.

The Pokemon Company revealed a handful of Gigantamax forms ahead of Sword and Shield's launch, but there are many more in the games beyond that. If you want to see all the Pokemon that have Gigantamax forms in Sword and Shield, we've rounded up the full list of Gigantamax-capable monsters below.

How To Get Gigantamax Pokemon

As previously mentioned, just because a species of Pokemon has a Gigantamax form doesn't mean that every Pokemon of that species is actually capable of Gigantamaxing. Presently, the only way to obtain a Gigantamax Pokemon in Sword and Shield is to encounter it in Max Raid battles, and they'll only appear after you've won the Dragon Badge. You can fairly easily tell if a Raid features a Gigantamax Pokemon by its silhouette when you interact with a raid den; if the silhouette looks different than the Pokemon's typical sprite, then you'll be battling its Gigantamax form.

If you manage to defeat the Gigantamax Pokemon in battle, then you'll have an opportunity to capture it. Unfortunately, you aren't guaranteed to catch the Pokemon, and if it pops out of the Poke Ball you threw, it'll run away and you'll need to wait for it to appear in another Max Raid. It also appears you can't pass down the ability to Gigantamax through breeding. On the bright side, however, most Pokemon you encounter through raids have at least a couple of perfect IVs, and you now have a means of changing their natures thanks to new Mint items, so it's possible to make them viable for competitive battling.

Cyber Monday Pokemon Deals 2019: Sword And Shield For $48, Let's Go Games, And More

With Black Friday over, we're now moving on to different deals for Cyber Monday. Well, sort of different. Most of the deals from Black Friday are still active, including a bunch for Pokemon games, accessories, and other merchandise. That also includes Cyber Monday deals on the recent Pokemon Sword / Shield versions, which just released a couple of weeks ago.

Right now, you can get either Pokemon Sword or Shield for $48 from Ebay. While the Cyber Monday deal is expected to last through December 2, the stock isn't. However, the stock has refreshed a couple of times this weekend, so if you find the games are sold out, it's probably worth keeping an eye on just in case. As of our last update, both games are in stock.

Some older Pokemon games are also on sale ahead of Cyber Monday. You can pick up last year's Switch Pokemon titles, Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee, for $43 each at Amazon, while Pokemon Ultra Moon for 3DS is $32.84.

The first Gen 8 Pokemon games take players to Galar, a picturesque region that's home to a variety of new and familiar Pokemon to catch and raise. While the games don't stray very far from the series' established formula, Sword and Shield introduce a handful of new features to help keep the experience fresh, including the Wild Area, an open-world locale where some incredibly strong Pokemon roam about. There are also some new battle mechanics to master like Dynamaxing, which temporarily supersizes a Pokemon during battle.

Right now, the best deal on Pokemon Sword and Shield is $48 with free shipping as part of Ebay's Cyber Monday sale.

Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu (Switch) Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu & Eevee | $43 ($60)

While Sword and Shield take place in an entirely new region, last year's Pokemon games, Let's Go, Pikachu and Let's Go, Eevee, instead reimagine the classic Pokemon Yellow version. The titles take players back to Kanto, the setting of the original Pokemon games, where you'll encounter the original 150 Pokemon and do battle against classic Gym Leaders like Brock and Misty. The games also take some influence from Pokemon Go, namely in terms of how you catch Pokemon; instead of battling wild monsters, you capture them by swinging your Joy-Con at the right time. Having a save file of the Let's Go Pikachu or Eevee gets you a free bonus in Pokemon Sword and Shield, as long as you claim it early.

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon (3DS) Pokemon Ultra Moon | $32.84 ($40)

The final mainline Pokemon games to hit the 3DS, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are, at their core, upgraded versions of 2016's Sun and Moon versions. While the basic storyline generally remains the same, the Ultra games expand the narrative with a new subplot focusing on the Legendary Pokemon Necrozma. A new organization called the Ultra Recon Squad also figures into the story, and there are several new Ultra Beasts to catch as well. Unfortunately, Ultra Sun is sold out almost everywhere, but Ultra Moon is available at Amazon for $32.84 for Cyber Monday.

Pokemon GO A Challenging Development: Step-by-Step Guide

A new Special Research quest believed to involve the Team Rocket GO leaders, "A Challenging Development," has appeared in Pokemon GO.

As Niantic's Support website says, you can complete the Special Research quests involving the Team GO Rocket Leaders and Giovanni once a month. However, you need to have completed the Special Research quest for last month, "Looming in the Shadows," in order to complete this Special Research quest. You also need to complete the "A Troubling Situation" quest in order to complete "Looming in the Shadows."

Here's what the support website says on the matter:

Trainers can receive Giovanni Special Research once per calendar month. For example, if you complete your September Giovanni Special Research in mid-October, you'll receive new Special Research shortly after. If you complete the September Research in mid-September, you'll need to wait until midnight on October 1st (local time) to receive the Research again.

So far, players have only seen two of the six steps for A Challenging Development. However, since those two steps are the exact same as the first two steps of Looming in the Shadows, we can reasonably assume that all of the other steps are the exact same between the two quests. The only difference appears to be that Giovanni uses a Shadow Zapdos instead of a Shadow Articuno, as players have found. If it turns out that there are differences, then we'll update the article accordingly.

Here is the step-by-step guide for A Challenging Development:

Quest 1 of 6

Spin 10 Pokestops – Reward: 500 XP

Defeat three Team GO Rocket Grunts – Reward: 500 XP

Catch one Shadow Pokemon – Reward: 500 XP

Completion Reward: 500 Stardust, 10 PokeBalls, 10 Razz Berries

Tips: This is a pretty easy first step. You'll find Team GO Rocket Grunts as you walk around spinning PokeStops. You'll know they're there because the PokeStop is noticeably darker and quivering.

Quest 2 of 6

Spin a PokeStop five days in a row – Reward: 750 XP

Purify 15 Shadow Pokemon – Reward: 750 XP

Win five Raids – Reward: 750 XP

Completion Reward: 1,000 Stardust, 3 Hyper Potions & 3 Revives

Tips: This step is going to take a bit more time, so just be patient and don't forget to spin PokeStops each day for five days. Make sure that you have the Candies and Stardust to purify all those Shadow Pokemon. Shadow Pokemon like Shadow Ratata and Shadow Zubat are relatively inexpensive to purify compared to other Shadow Pokemon. As for the Raids, you can complete Raids of any difficulty tier and complete the task. You don't need to go after the five-star Raids if you don't want to.

Use six super effective Charge Moves in Gym Battles – 1,000 XP

Win three Great League Trainer Battles against another Trainer – 1,000 XP

Defeat six Team GO Rocket Grunts – 1,000 XP

Completion Reward: 1,500 Stardust, 15 Great Balls & 5 Pinap Berries

Tips: After spending five days in a row spinning PokeStops, you can really get the ball rolling now.

You can find other players to battle with pretty easily if you coordinate with them over dedicated Pokemon GO social media groups. You can find a lot of players around five star Raids, especially during the weekly Legendary Raid Hour. Just be aware of strangers.

Defeat Team GO Rocket Leader Arlo – Reward: 1,250 XP

Defeat Team GO Rocket Leader Cliff – Reward: 1,250 XP

Defeat Team GO Rocket Leader Sierra – Reward: 1,250 XP

Completion Reward: 2,000 Stardust, one Super Rocket Radar & three Golden Razz Berries

According to a new blog post from Niantic, Team GO Rocket Grunts may now drop Mysterious Components when defeated. Assemble six of those to make Rocket Radars that can be used to sniff out the Team GO Rocket Leaders and battle them. You should have picked up six Mysterious Components from the previous step.

Note: It looks like you can get components even if your item box is full, according to one user on The Silph Road Subreddit.

Once you craft a Rocket Radar, you can equip or unequip it from your bag. Tap the Rocket Radar button below the compass to activate the Rocket Radar. Using the Rocket Radar reveals all the Leader Hideouts in range, according to Niantic's support website. They resemble regular PokeStops until you get within range of them, at which point the Team GO Rocket Leader will appear next to the PokeStop. Be careful as Leaders are more powerful than the average Grunt. If you lose a battle against the Leader, you can challenge them again until the Leader Hideout disappears from the map. Once you defeat them, the Rocket Radar breaks.

Even though players with Rocket Radars are the only ones able to detect hideouts for the leaders, they can still collaborate since hideouts appear to players in the same places, according to the blog post. After you create your first Rocket Radar, the items will then be available to purchase from the in-game shop with PokeCoins, according to Niantic's support website. Only players level eight and above can get Mysterious Components and take on the Leaders, according to the website.

Find the Team GO Rocket Boss – Reward: 2,500 Stardust

Battle the Team GO Rocket Boss – Reward: 1,500 XP

Defeat the Team GO Rocket Boss – Reward: 3 Silver Pinap Berries

Completion Reward: 3,000 Stardust, one Fast TM & one Charged TM (plus the rewards you get from Giovanni including Shadow Zapdos)

The last step rewarded you with a Super Rocket Radar, which will help you locate the big boss of Team GO Rocket, Giovanni. According to a trailer released today, Giovanni will be able to use Shadow Moltres, Articuno and Zapdos. The Super Rocket Radar gives you the location of Hideouts, but there will be decoy Grunts disguised as Giovanni as well as Giovanni himself, according to the support website. Just keep looking at all of the highlighted PokeStops until you find him.

With Pikachu playing a big role in both the new season of the Pokemon anime as well as in the recently released Nintendo Switch exclusive game, Pokemon Sword and Shield, it's no surprise that Pikachu continues to appear in a number of different ways across the fan spectrum. With the premiere episode of Pokemon: The Series showing off Ash's Pikachu's original form of Pichu, we can sometimes forget about its ultimate form, Raichu. Ash Ketchum's Pikachu of course had a tenacious relationship to the Raichu it met originally, with the gym leader Lieutenant Surge using it as his number one pocket monster. When Ash encountered the evolved form of his electric mouse, Ketchum debated whether or not it would be necessary to evolve Pikachu. Eventually, thanks in part to Ash's nervousness and Pikachu's reluctance to transform once again, the decision was made for Ketchum's "right hand man" to retain his current form.

Luckily, Ash eventually learned that Pikachu's speed would be enough to defeat Surge's Raichu and the discussion of whether or not the Pokemon mascot should ever use a Thunder Stone to evolve was left on the wayside. While Raichu isn't anywhere near as popular as it's "cousin" Pikachu, or even it's distant "cousin" in Pichu, its clear that there is still a soft spot for this ultimate form among fans of the world of Pokemon.
