Pokémon GO Turtwig Community Day: How To Get Yourself A Shiny, Powerful Torterra

Pokemon GO

Niantic

It’s time again for another Pokémon GO Community Day, this time focused on Gen 4 starter Turtwig, a grass-type turtle that evolves into Grotle then Torterra in its final form. I believe this is the first Gen 4 Community Day, which is appropriate considering that Gen 5 is about to technically launch this week.

Players will have three hours to start catching as many Turtwigs as possible, beginning at 11 AM ET today, a somewhat rare Sunday Community Day, as usually these are on Saturdays. Obviously one of the draws of the event is to get a Torterra that evolves with the unique move Frenzy Plant, which can only happen today, but moreover, people are probably going to be shiny hunting.

Shiny Turtwig, Grotle and Torterra are not exactly crazily different from their normal versions. They have a little less green and a little more yellow in them. Different enough to be noticeable, but not a total color flip like we often see with shinies.

As ever, Shiny rates hovering around 5%, meaning that 1 in 20 Turtwig encounters should be shiny. I’ve seen some claim it’s as high as 8%, which would be more like 1 in 15. But on days like today, catching boatloads of Turtwig should not be a problem.

Remember to also have incense active, as on days like today, that will also spawn bonus Community Day Pokémon. The same goes for lures, which should be active wherever you can put them, as one lure always lasts for three hours during Community Day, getting you 6x the bang for your buck.

The unique bonus today is 3x catch Stardust, which I honestly think is one of the best bonuses considering how much it synergizes with the act of…catching as many Pokémon as humanly possible in a short window. So build up your reserves.

The goal is to catch as many shinies as you can muster during this three hour window, then picking your highest IV one to evolve into a shiny Torterra with Frenzy Plant, a true, one-of-a-kind rarity that cannot be repeated after today.

I’m not sure if Torterra, even with Frenzy Plant, is going to be elevated into the top tier of grass-types, as I think there are just too many better options with better stats, but I don’t know, maybe I’m not giving it enough credit, and I still want one regardless.

Good luck shiny hunting today, and I will see you out there for three hours.
