Here’s What You Get From Finishing Pokémon GO’s ‘A Spooky Message’: Special Research

It’s Halloween in Pokémon GO, when the ghost-types come out to play and a certain special Pokémon makes its now-annual appearance. The Special Research ‘A Spooky Message’ is now live again in the game, and anyone who missed it last year might be wondering what it’s all about, especially since the first step is somewhat daunting, if not all that hard. Read on for the full quest steps and reward.

“A Spooky Message” made its debut with Halloween last year, and now seems like it’s going to come back every year. It gives you Spiritomb, which according to lore is made of the collection of 108 spirits, hence the specific number you’re shooting for with both of these steps. This is the only way to catch Spiritomb, so if you’re new to the game you definitely want to pick up this special research while it’s available. Note that you don’t have to complete it during the Halloween event: you just need to sign in once to get the quest and then you can do it anytime.

Here are the steps:

Step 1

  • Catch 10 Ghost-type Pokémon
  • Make eight Great Throws
  • Use 108 berries to catch mon
  • Step 2:

  • Catch 10 Dark-Type Pokémon
  • Spin Eight stops you haven’t visited before
  • Catch 108 Pokémon
  • Step 3:

It’s a manageable quest, even if it takes a little while, but you should be able to get this done in one solid outing or two if you’re committed. I do wish that more events came with their own special research in this game: Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has its problems, but it does do a better job of handing out quests to give a little flavor to the various spawn events. Pokémon GO’s quests are much rarer, aside from the standard field research.

It’s a solid event out there, so get out there and catch to make sure you don’t miss Litwick and Darkrai while they’re easily available. And those costumed Kanto starters are cute as buttons, of course. Shiny costumed mon are bound to be highly sought after for trading, so keep an eye out there.
