'Pokémon Go' Raid Day Event: Start Time, Shiny Nidorino and Gengar & More

The Pokémon Day celebration continues in Pokémon Go, with a Special Raid Day event featuring Nidorino and Gengar.

This special limited-time event will give players more chances to capture Nidorino and Gengar, two Pokémon that first appeared in the loading screen of Pokémon Red and Blue back in 1998.

So, in typical Pokémon Go fashion, both Pokémon will appear in Raids with Party Hats on.

The chance for more Shiny Pokémon and in-game bonuses are abound in this special event, so, if you want to take full advantage, here's everything you need to know.

POKEMON GO NIDORINO & GENGAR RAID DAY START TIME

The Pokémon Go Nidorino and Gengar Raid Day event begins Sunday, March 1 from 2-5 p.m. local time.

SHINY NIDORINO & GENGAR

As with many of these special Raid Day events, Nidorino and Gengar's Shiny variants will appear more frequently after defeating them in raid battles.

Players won't know if they've encountered a Shiny Nidorino or Gengar until after they are defeated and you are taken to the capture screen. Gengar's Shiny form isn't much different from its original coloring, so you may have to look for the shiny symbol next to its name.

Shiny Nidorino, on the other hand, turns from purple to blue. Even the Party Hat variants of both monsters can be found in Shiny form.

NIDORINO & GENGAR RAID COUNTERS

Nidorino will begin appearing in Level 2 Raids on Sunday, making it relatively easy to take down even if you're going solo.

It's a pure Poison-type Pokémon, making it weak to Ground and Psychic-type attacks. There are plenty of powerful Pokémon with those typings that can help you defeat Nidorino, including Rhyperior, Mewtwo and many more.

Gengar will begin appearing in Level 4 Raids, making it slightly more difficult to take down. Gengar is a Ghost and Poison-type Pokémon and has weaknesses to Ground, Psychic, Ghost and Dark-type attacks.

It's also resistant to Poison, Fairy, Bug, Fighting and Normal-type attacks.

These Gengar will be caught knowing the moves Lick and Psychic, two powerful attacks for this particular Pokémon.

Here is a list of Pokémon that are great options against Gengar during the Raid Day event:

  • Mewtwo with Confusion and Shadow Ball
  • Groudon with Mud Shot and Earthquake
  • Gengar with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
  • Metagross with Zen Headbutt and Psychic
  • Tyranitar with Bite and Crunch
  • Latios with Zen Headbutt and Psychic
  • Weavile with Feint Attack and Foul Play
  • Dark-type Pokémon like Honchkrow or Psychic types like Alakazam are also solid options.

Trainers will get one free Raid Pass during the event window for each Raid you visit (up to five). This will give players more opportunities than usual to find and capture these rare Pokémon.
